Taking off from their base at Down Ampney in Glos to re- supply troops at Arnhem on the 19/09/1944 Dakotas of 271 Sqd. were ordered to drop at 900 feet due to the small area the troops had been pressed into. The aircraft modelled here that of Fl. lt David Lord was hit and on fire but he carried on and dropped,his wing about to collapse he circled to drop his remaining containers and then ordered his crew to bail out remaining at the controls to enable this. For his heroic actions Lord was to receive posthumously the Victoria Cross.
