The Ranger was one of the typical American cutters built in the first half of the 19th century and was basically used for surveillance and coast guard duties. It was armed with a large carronade installed in the center of the deck and rotated on a circular guide-way, allowing rapid fire from both sides of the ship with a single weapon. |
